One of the absolute best on-the-ground, direct action oriented organizers has gotten bailed out twice by his neighbors and avoided arrest at least a couple times because of community members that recognize him. Some fairly non-radical people stood by him when he was facing repression for pretty radical action. A lot of it came down to the fact that he watches peoples' kids, helps elderly folks get to the hospital, shares stuff from his garden, just looks out for people in a neighborly way.

People say that you need to get to know your neighbors and that's true, but you can start by just bringing people some extra cookies or stuff from your garden, or doing a cookout with a sign welcoming people to stop by, or greeting your neighbors when you see them and introducing yourself and swapping info.
