I'm an 80s kid and cell phones weren't a thing until about a year or so after high school. And back then they were just phones. But had smartphones been a thing at the time, I have no doubt they would have been banned from the table. No way would my parents tolerate such a distraction when we sure supposed to be talking about our week, what we did, and any stories about memorable events. It's gotta be tough for parents today to have to wrestle with that issue.
