Control your failure mode. I think a really big key to success is the ability to direct your failures.
When BMW first started putting electric window motors in their cars, they left a port in the door panels & behind the sunroof where you could insert a handle (from the included tool kit) & manually crank them shut if the motors failed. That's not a bad failure mode.
The same thing applies to dieting or changing your life in any way. Accept that you will likely have weak moments & plan ways to limit the damage.
I've been mostly carnivore for 5 years or so. I was eating fairly low carb for 5 or 6 years before that. Once in a while I still get cravings for something sweet. But the dessert items that I make (despite being extremely enjoyable) have fewer carbs, & are probably healthier & more satiating than just about any main course on a standard american diet. If I wanted to (which I don't) I could basically eat nothing but my desserts now & still be healthier than I was in my 20s.
