ESA's upcoming LISA gravitational wave mission will consist of three spacecraft flying in a perfect triangle 2.5 million km apart. They will fire lasers at each other, maintaining a perfect distance, which will be distorted as gravitational waves wash past them from merging supermassive black holes. NASA is building the telescopes that send and receive infrared beams from spacecraft to spacecraft, and this week they completed a full-scale engineering prototype.
