Times have changed. Not completely but enough, especially given the context. Those indians weren't exactly well-equipped or advanced or even civilized as the westerners that were ruling them. Nowadays you can buy fucking missile launchers in the black market (even those funded by US money to Ukraine LOL). But I do take your point in general, I just don't think it's going to work long-term. Especially if immigrants keep coming in uncontrolled. It's only acceptable IMHO as a stop-gap solution to stop the riots.
Also note that the French (and the rest of europe) have left the killing to the Greeks, the Italians and the Spaniards. Their Frontex forces are "working with" border countries to "repel" immigrants. Last week or so a boat sank with around 700 of them on board here in Greece. Rescue efforts were.. uhm.. let's say "slow". So, for those hungry for killing immigrants, it's being done already. At least it's a deterrent at the border, doing it in France would just shift them to another country and then you'd just have to do it all over again next door.
I could understand the police being forced to shoot someone trying to burn people alive or to kill them but not a general extermination mandate. That's just not necessary. Or if it is, it hasn't been proven necessary yet. Just round them up and kick them out.
