Many Choctaw warriors were stirred by Tecumseh’s rally for intertribal unity. Some Choctaw chiefs were supportive. But one chief, Pushmataha, argued that the Americans were friendly to the Choctaw. He was proud that no Choctaw had ever drawn a bow against America. He cautioned the people against Tecumseh’s zealotry, and even threatened any Choctaw people thinking of joining Tecumseh.
The debate between Tecumseh and Pushmataha was long, impassioned, and became the stuff of legends.
