I think you just fill up the giant drum, and periodically flush and replace. When used for real, you put it through "some kind of filter" to get rid of any biologicals that grew, but that's where I'm lost. I can't tell if I really need clay and charcoal etc etc or if I can do something a lot simpler knowing it's just biologicals.
