I do this all the time, 2 reasons.
1. I'm an introvert.
2. Experience shows that this is the most effective way to get my issue resolved correctly and nicely. This is more effective than my nice wife being nice with me not there because they see that there is another tier of complaint and appreciate that we chose to be nice. If we start the complaint with me with my resting Neanderthal I'm gonna club you face some people get defensive no matter how nice I act.
I can't change my face and I won't stop exercising over other peoples insecurity. So here we are. If they are not nice to my wife you might catch us make the handoff to mean complaint.
We know what each of us are good at and play to our strengths as a team.
TLDR, that was a good couple using effective teamwork. Try to achieve that level with your spouse.
