i consider mathematics (and programming as its application) as treatment for my depression.
my reasoning is this: as a depressed person, i'm uniquely qualified, because i'm constantly thinking about problems already - and could therefore just as well feel bad while thinking about logical puzzles instead.
primed for disappointment? complaining about things i can't change? despair as no one else understands what i'm talking about? all that is normal business when you're working with equations.
