I would argue that Drivechain is a conservative improvement with benefits far outweighing any risks as all the risk falls on the sidechains, they are effectively firewalled from the BTC mainnet.

This is what drivechains can enable, though you could make the argument we can elect to do it a slightly less secure way (we can quite a lot right now, drivechains just greatly lower the barrier to entry for innovations and are a kind of max security-to-cost benefit)
