Agreed
Notifications only display / link to a few things:
↪ A reply targeted at you (kind 1111 preferably)
⚡ A zap targeted at you
😃 A reaction targeted at you
👤 You've been mentioned
Only the latter can potentially directly link to complex content types.
For all the rest, you just need an app that is good at replies, zaps and reactions.
That sounds a lot like a chat app to me. With the added benefit that you can manage all those notifications by community / private group / conversation. This lets you choose what notifications (or even alerts of new publications) you dive into at what time.
The chat app doesn't need to be good at rendering 3D print files, for example. It just has to render + interact with the reply, reaction and zap section. The moment the user decides to open the 3D print STL file is when handlers should be suggested.
Those handlers can, by the way, be suggested by the community relay the STL file is living on. Because a community dedicated to 3D printing will have waaaay more skin in the game when it comes to suggesting good 3D print apps than , let's say, your follow-list.
