As a counterexample, I spoke up when I realized I was certain that I wanted to play violin. My parents were surprised at my ambition and my certainty. Grandma gave me a violin for Christmas, and the next year I started taking lessons. It became one of my favorite things about school and favorite activities, and became an object of intense discipline, a respite from academic drudgery, and a common place to engage with friendships I still hold dear.
