The big reason why American libertarianism made itself part of the right in the mid-20th century (and incoherently so, if you understand the philosophical roots of libertarianism) was a shared anti-communism. But this was largely an illusory overlap. Libertarians viewed communism as a threat to individual liberty and a free economy. Conservatives at the time didn’t so much care about that, but rather saw communism as synonymous with agitation for civil rights, which they opposed.
