The shadecloth, mulching and dense planting creates a sort of mini-climate in each bed.
I have a couple of beds that use insect netting instead because I ran out of shadecloth. I totally covered both beds together rather than individually, . It has lots of gaps for insect entry and departure (top and sides). I am astounded by 2 things:
First, the mini climate inside is excellent! I have chillies, eggplants, basils, broad beans, fennel, flat leaf chives, one tomato, and more in there. There isn't as much "shade" from the netting, yet the plants love the environment it creates.
Secondly, the bees love it, and have found the entries/exits without problem. This amazes me. I was prepared for some issues and thought I might have to replace it. But the only insect I have had to help was a butterfly.
