It's basically the idea of Steve Reich's Piano Phase. I did some experimenting, and got kinda good at finding those sweet spots where that sound sort of emanates from.

Wear headphones, and focus on the repeating theme. You'll hear a lot going on in the background. But it's all phasing that gives you the rhythm thing going on with it.
