How to have political conflict in a respectful way...
I'm in a situation where I strongly disagree with some new friends about how best to organize something. They are anarchists and I respect their politics, but I think they are wrong about this particular thing and it feels important to me.
I've been speaking my mind clearly and without couching what I think too much (so I'm being direct for a Canadian). Outside the meeting, I followed up with one of the people and they were pretty upset, feeling that I was shutting them down and silencing them. I apologized and asked them how we can disagree in a better way. We will be meeting up to talk about it in advance of the next meeting where we will be trying to decide on the issue.
Disagreements matter because our ideas matter to us. Relationships also matter, and we need to take care of them without just letting the disagreements go. How best to do this, there's no fixed answer. But I hope that talking more when things feel tense will help find a path forward.
