The pendulum of beauty standards swings as a continuum. What we consider obese today was the standardized beauty in a time where e.g., food was scarce. Today varying types of skinniness seems to be more acceptable due to the science behind consuming processed foods and possibly psychological reactions to modern society. Obesity can also be dna characteristic e.g., in ancient Polyneisan societies they ate mostly carbohydrate rich foods for months to prepare for long seafaring voyages. This was part of the tradition of exploring and settling along the pacific chain of islands. As a result, many today in such regions have this gene as it was passed down from their ancestors as a mechanism for survival.
