Thanks for suggesting things to try.

I do have two different power adapters, in addition to the owner's power adapter. Since it is an HP EliteBook 850 G6, it can be charged with both the blue tip and USB C power adapters. With both, the orange charging indicator lights up.

I'm going to take some other advice and just let it sit over the weekend with both the internal batter and CMOS battery unplugged.

Will try again later next week.
