It depends on who you were doing it for. It was lucrative enough (up through 83) to literally code for the PDP-11, given you learned how to reference the BACKTAB. By this, I mean Mattel again, the Intellivision. CP1610 was basically a PDP-11 with a little custom hardware. Activision, Mattel, and Atari all produced games for this, and it was nowhere near as popular as the 2600.

Everyone was making their own computer for the home market after Apple introduced the ][. It was the time of the garage built hardware. Nerds be nerding, it wasn't for glamor.
