The Sanhedrin didn't want anyone to be more exalted than God during the Sabbath because it disrupted their financial endeavors within the Temple. When Jesus casts away the merchants and releases the sacrifices from the Temple, during Passover, that's when the Sanhedrin had it's Lehman Brother's moment and realized Jesus had to be punished to justify the financial fiasco, they were willing to pay 30 silver coins for the man's head.
