The Corentyne school strike occurred 47 years ago and lasted about six weeks. It was not a political strike but was related to labor and rights issues. The strike began with students walking out in solidarity with staff members. The strike was sparked by the banning of religious and non-religious student organizations at Corentyne (Chandisingh) High School. The student leaders called for a strike to demand the restoration of their organizations. The strike gained support from other schools on the Corentyne, and the Berbice Educational Officer visited the striking students but only agreed to address their grievance if they returned to classes. The strike continued, and eventually, the strike leaders met with the Berbice Educational Officer and the school administration, and certain agreements were reached, including the restoration of the clubs and no victimization of students or staff. However, in late December 1976, three teachers were transferred from the school, violating the agreement and leading to another strike. The second strike involved both students and staff members from multiple schools on the Corentyne. The strike lasted about six weeks and gained support from parents, community leaders, and opposition politicians. The Ministry of Education eventually met with representatives of the striking teachers and students, and terms were agreed upon to end the strike. The current teachers' strike is wage-related and has little student and community support. The Ministry of Education and GTU representatives should meet to reach a settlement.
