I remember I had a Che shirt. Edge lord shit really, just like the guy said "you're just doing it because you think it's cool." I wore it to work, and my boss, a Tamil Sri Lankan, asked me if I know who that guy is. I said the usually bullshit, revolutionary leader yada yada yada and he interrupted me and said "that man is responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of my people." That's it, that's all he said. I shut up and moved on, denied it in my mind and just got red faced and life goes on.
But it stirred something in me, a curiosity, so I researched what he said. Congo, Cuba, Sri Lanka, millions of people dead. That boss of mine was a fuckhead in many ways, but I owe him a debt of gratitude, not just for helping me find the truth there, but stirring a curiosity and a desire to know the truth that is with me to this day and has served me very well. It started there, and I don't know how ossified that nonsense and that pressure to refuse the truth when you can easily find it would he in me today, I credit him with saving my mind.
