I feel like I've done a poor job expressing what I'm talking about. I'm talking about "encounter" stories. Claims of abduction. There is this whole lore around what aliens are, what they look like, what they do, and it evolved in interplay with media over the past 60 years. And there are thousands of people who think this is very real.
But, like other folk monsters, the fae, elves etc. that people sometimes think to real I tend to see such stories as filling some need, addressing some anxiety.
