While strong unions are often a good thing, in the US they were often quite protectionist, including against immigrant workers who might take jobs for less money (the current US union movement seems possibly different, but it is still developing).
I get the sense that perhaps the anti-immigration views of the left in Europe might be connected to the still-strong unions there?
