Many people are surprised to find out how long ants live. When I first learned that queen ants could live for decades that made me want to try antkeeping. Before that keeping insects sounded like just a way to get your heart broken really fast. (I'm looking at you, pet rats!)
But workers are generally shorter lived. But it makes sense to me that an ant ought to live at least 15 months so she can pass on her seasonally specific knowledge. Eg. the locations of food sources like aphids.
