One of my favorite features of Old Old Twitter was the with_friends feed. From someone's profile you could literally jump into a view presenting the timeline as they experienced it. There are probably a million problems with this, in terms of computational/bandwidth burden on instances, or safety of users. But even if not that in particular, I think it's worth considering things in that vein.
