Best way to avoid one's entire community being labelled on the basis of a (let's say for argument's sake) small group of rotten-doers, is by refusing to protect them and instead handing them over to the law.
If instead, one chooses to embrace the rotten-doers, one has no basis to complain about other people developing negative opinions on one's community.
