Microsoft’s been leaning hard on OpenAI for Copilot, its flagship AI assistant baked into Microsoft 365, but now they’re exploring other options. The Information broke the story, saying Microsoft’s AI division, under Mustafa Suleyman, has been testing these rival models to see how they stack up. xAI Groke (that’s Elon Musk’s outfit), Meta, Anthropic (founded by ex-OpenAI folks), and DeepSeek (a Chinese startup making waves with cost-efficient models) are all in the mix. Microsoft’s also training its own models, dubbed MAI, to reduce reliance on OpenAI.
Also perhaps Microsoft is afraid of the suit coming from Musk regarding IP disputes.
Grok is already better than Open AI in a tenth of the time and nobody has the compute xAI does.
RIP ChatGPT.
