so it's time. i already had an installed slackware qemu. connected over ssh through some qemu magic. right off the bat, gpg verification fails doing a package update. nor can i connect to any https sites. checking in, it turns out the clock was off. continuing, ssl certs weren't installed (or corrupt). update-ca-certs should fix it, but it complained that perl wasn't install. this created a circular dependency. fortunately, you could turn off gpg verfication in the package manager. yeah
