I'm having a coffee at Governor's cafe in George St, Ōtepoti. According to the sign on the front, It opened in 1977. It was here in the mid-90s, when it became one of my regular teenage haunts. It was here in 2012, when I moved back here, and it's still here now.
Perhaps I'm becoming a bit conservative in my dotage, but there's something about that longevity of a community institution that I find very comforting.
