The reactions to this haven't been unusual. If the government builds a highway or improves roads between these villages absolutely no-one even notices it, although the cost absolutely dwarfs whatever they now want to spend to gently support such "frivolity" as fundamental basic aspects of European urban/village life like grocery stores and churches. Its not as if these small cities, towns, villages don't pay taxes to begin with.
