Completely garbage. The rules are more stringent for the minor parties and independent candidates, but for the two major parties every state has provisions for them replacing their candidates before the general election. The details vary but the short version is that the candidate is whoever the party says it is and the only real deadline is the ballots being sent off to the printers.
It will, however, be a major distraction and a source of disruption.
