Samantha Harvey has become the first woman since 2019 to win the Booker Prize. Here, the team at Booker give a detailed breakdown of her novel, "Orbital," the first book set in space to win the prize. It focuses on six astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station, watching the planet, living their lives, and forming the bonds that keep them from total solitude. "All year we have celebrated fiction that inhabits ideas rather than declaiming on issues, not finding answers but changing the question of what we wanted to explore," explains chairman of judges Edmund de Vaal. "Our unanimity about 'Orbital' recognises its beauty and ambition. It reflects Harvey’s extraordinary intensity of attention to the precious and precarious world we share." Harvey said of the book that she wanted it "more than anything, to be a book about beauty, and about joy, and about … the rapture of looking at something so beautiful that also happens to be our home."
