I think the benefits provided by during and after the WWII era are part of the reason we don't have national health care. A sizable chunk of the US voting population could get health care from either their military or their union jobs. The decline of the manufacturing sector in the 70's changed that. There was a kind of lame attempt to get national health care under Carter, but Ted Kennedy wanted a better version and shot it down.
