This is partly why I have little buy-in for "Mastodon is too complicated."
Twitter was an absolute smorgasbord of confusion, bizarre ideas, and bad conventions. People still joined it.
IMO, the core of the problem is that we've had a decade+ of capitalist social media growing roots. People established ideas and habits. Now they're some mix of too busy, lazy, and locked-in via network effect to learn something new.
