Light themes aren't supposed to cook your retinas. You put the contrast on the elements that have readable elements, but the rest of the whitespace (ie the page background) should be more muted. I'm not sure when this trend to make everything solid white or solid black started, but modern light and dark themes are awful as a result. ​
