In the new PHB the "Origins" section, which is Backgrounds and Species, the art is an attempt to give slice of life vignettes of what was possible before the character started their path to heroics.

I love all of it, but have noticed one thing I question.

The gnome art is essentially just rock gnomes. There may be a single forest gnome, but they aren't equals at all.

It's an odd decision to have kept two types of gnomes and jettison the types of dwarves and halflings, especially with that art
