I am not sure what ghosts have to do with it, but the point is not to explain things, but to make people act within certain value framework. E.g. do this and that and you will make yourself and others happy. Christianity and islam weirdly integrated some mythology of nature as a way to impose that, hence they are in clash with science. Other religions do not have that issue.
