Paṇḍakālayasūtra (Toh. 1488)

Thus have I heard: at one time the Blessed One was dwelling on the coast in Goa surrounded by a retinue of monks and nuns. At that time a wealthy Brahmin came to the Blessed One seeking an audience. His mind was troubled, his thoughts were troubled, his mental consciousness was troubled.

The Brahmin said, “O Blessed One, near to my best farmland there is a beach known as the Abode of Perverts (paṇḍakālaya). Every night they make a terrible din, such that my oxen are unable to sleep. As a result, my fields lie fallow. My mind is troubled, my thoughts are troubled, my mental consciousness is troubled. Please come to my aid, O Blessed One.”

Then with his divine eye (divyacakṣu) the Bhagavān examined the beach named the Abode of Perverts. He saw them engaging in unnatural sexual acts. He saw the men wearing the clothing of women and the women wearing the clothing of men. Gathering Ānanda, Śāriputra, and the seniormost monks and nuns of the saṅgha with him, sitting in the lotus posture the Blessed One and his retinue flew through the air and descended upon the beach named the Abode of Perverts.

“Who is the Lord of this Abode?” asked the Blessed One.

“I am the Lord of this Abode,” said one among the men who was wearing the clothes of a woman.

The Blessed One replied, “You will never be a natural (prakṛtyā) woman. You have no womb (garbha), you have no female sexual organ, you have no menstrual blood. At this very time, your parents are dwelling in the Trāyatriṃśa Heaven of the Thirty-Three on the top of Mount Sumeru. From above they see you down here in this way and they are ashamed. Despite dwelling amongst the gods (devas), their minds are troubled, their thoughts are troubled, their mental consciousnesses are troubled.”

Then the mind of the Lord of the Abode of Perverts became troubled. His thoughts became troubled. His mental consciousness became troubled. Suddenly he hurled himself into the sea and perished. With his divine eye the Blessed One saw him descending to the Raurava Hell [for suicides]. Then with his power of magical display the Blessed One showed this descent to the Raurava Hell to the perverts (paṇḍakas) who had gathered there on the beach.

“O Blessed One!” they exclaimed. “Save us from this result!”

Then all of the perverts gathered there on the beach took refuge in the Three Jewels. They stopped engaging in unnatural sexual acts. The men wore the clothing of men and the women wore the clothing of women. Then with his divine eye the Buddha saw that through the force of this merit the Lord of the Abode of Perverts had not taken birth in the Raurava Hell, but instead took birth in the Trāyatriṃśa Heaven of the Thirty-Three next to his parents. There they all three meditated until attaining the status of Non-Returner.
