My only exposure to Cantonese is the Chinese restaurants I grew up with back in NY. I think a lot of the chefs were actually from Hong Kong. Listening to them yell at each other while cooking exposed me to the unique sounds of the language, which are decidedly different from Mandarin. My exposure to Mandarin comes from Kung Fu Theater, which I used to watch every Sunday as a kid. Those movies were always in Mandarin. So I could discern the differences in how each language sounds.
