I’m a Virginian, born and raised. My Dad’s side of the family is also still in southwestern VA, on the farm my great great grandfather built with his own two hands. They’re still growing tobacco and beans too.
The thing most people don’t understand is that these aren’t political people. They don’t vote or follow political races anymore. They genuinely believe that the left and right are two sides of the same coin and no matter who gets elected, they’ll get screwed. History has shown it to them over and over again, and I can’t find the lie there. So it is somewhat remarkable that they’re showing an interest at all. And Oliver Anthony is bringing it in a format they know, understand and already like. He is one of them, inherently trusted far more than any politician, and he’s saying the things they know they aren’t supposed to say out loud but think all the time. One of them is being recognized and he’s singing what they were thinking.
This isn’t left or right, it’s just forgotten people trying to be remembered and seeing a chance to tell everyone else that they’re still there, growing tobacco and beans.
