Fascinating infographic about the growth of video games! Some thoughts:
* Of course mobile gaming crushes everything. Everyone has a smartphone on them constantly, it’s how Gen Z prefers to game, and it’s more accessible in developing nations.
* PC gaming is now bigger than console gaming, and I imagine it’s going to get bigger now that handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally are taking off. Nowadays, you can have that console experience on PC.
* The infographic says handhelds are dead, but I question that: the Nintendo Switch is a handheld, and so is the Steam Deck.
* I’m glad that VR/AR is continuing to grow, but they really are a pain to use
* Seeing how console gaming substantially lags behind mobile and PC gaming, can we please stop treating it like the “premium” way to game? Not only do fewer people on consoles, they don’t even offer the best performance.
* I’m shocked that arcades still have life but it gives me hope for that one arcade in my town that still exists
* All this growth in gaming makes me even more upset about all those lay-offs that occurred in 2023. I hope all those creatives get back on their feet quickly.
