So this is a slightly dumb question but I've never been able to get a satisfactory answer:
What actually *is* a port? How are they implemented?
My model is that there's some kind of program running on a computer that gets *all* the packets and passes each one on to the program that has registered with a particular port but I don't know if that's true or what that program is called if it does exist. I also have a vague notion that this has to do with sockets somehow?
