Damn, I didn't read your second post first so the stuff in brackets is kinda what you wrote too :P
(I also may be doing the total per year wrong, since OP worded it weirdly, he said per year and with a day off, but I'm now guessing he meant a day off per week.
I hear many claim a 40-hour work week and 8 hours a day, so it was actually two days a year, thus the total wage was only 260. 260 * 5 = 1300)
$1300 dollars today is only $41,428.37 or $159 dollars per day, or $20 and hour. today. Not to mention:
"The $5-a-day rate was about half pay and half bonus. The bonus came with character requirements and was enforced by the Socialization Organization. This was a committee that would visit the employees' homes to ensure that they were doing things the "American way." They were supposed to avoid social ills such as gambling and drinking. They were to learn English, and many (primarily the recent immigrants) had to attend classes to become "Americanized." Women were not eligible for the bonus unless they were single and supporting the family. Also, men were not eligible if their wives worked outside the home."
So many workers earned a rate of just $2.34 a day, translated to 74$ now, or just $9.25 an hour or just $19,375.73 a year.
