If, like me, you use Mastodon via a regular desktop browser and, also like me, you feel weird about having private mentions showing up looking the same as everything else, I can highly suggest the little bit of CSS that Christian (who has since moved servers) has outlined here back in July. I use it with the browser plugin Stylus and it works great.
