Looking from the outside, it seems like the only civic organizations in the U.S. that punch above their weight by acting like people in a democracy should, belong to the Christian right.
It may seem ironic because some of them have anti-democratic goals, but that does not mean they are not setting a good example for democratic civic action and organization. Democracy is not voting every few years and protesting if that does not work. You create permanent organizations and networks, figure out where the power is, and you get involved. Even a little bit.
I'm not American, but if I were, I would have the Democratic Party structure and decision-making process mapped out from federal to state level and know who to call, how to get involved, and who does what. Then I would volunteer. There are other organizations to use as well.
