Commercial vehicles here have smaller snoots than their US cousins. With the elevated driving position, you don't feel as close to the car in front. I have to be super vigilent about maintaining a safe distance when driving my Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (same as a Dodge Sprinter).
On the other paw, I was tailgated by someone in a black VW Crafter the other day who absolutely lost his mind when I started to slow down (if the veh behind you does not have enough distance to stop, you slow down to reduce the amount of energy they're going to dump into you, and to encourage them to overtake and piss off).
Like most things, tho, we tend to remember bad experiences more than good ones, so you might encounter forty white vans in a day who are perfectly safe and courteous, but it's the one that sits on your ass that you remember.
