Signal is great (it was the first to really bring forward and post-compromise security to a major app - and to other major apps). BUT Signal doesn't scale well for large groups. You're basically having a 1:1 DM conversation with each participant in the group. MLS solves this by using binary ratchet trees and makes groups much more efficient. It's also semi-agnostic about the ciphersuites used so it's built to be interoperable across different clients.
