Some of you may wonder why the Decentralized Music folks seem so loud about Wavlake. I can't speak for all of them, but I can speak for me.
I didn't want to build LN Beats. It's not my passion project. I have other apps that excite me more. I built LN Beats to oppose what Wavlake was doing. There are several musicians that have their music in RSS feeds, just like Wavlake does with their music, that were not invited to the v4v music party that Wavlake was throwing. When Wavlake started getting some traction, the musicians that decided to host their music in places other than Wavlake were not able to be played in Wavlake. It goes against the free and open ethos. So I built LN Beats because I wanted ALL v4v musicians to have an app that made finding their music easier. I don't take any of the sats sent to the artists, and I don't even ask for much support. Any of the bands that are featured in LN Beats are because they volunteered to include me in their value split to support the work I'm doing.
The idea behind podcasting and now nostr, is you can use any client you want, and your content will be available in any of those clients, because it's protocols over platforms. Wavlake doesn't work like that. Wavlake is more than happy to have their content in your client (that way you can pay them from any app), but they don't want your content in their client unless you're hosting your content on their platform. Is that what the nostriches want, another walled garden platform?
I speak out against Wavlake because they get so much love from the nostr community, but judging their actions and business practices, it doesn't seem like their values align with yours. Just because they let you sign in using an nsec doesn't mean they're an open platform. Try to find any of the music by The Doerfels (https://lnbeats.com/artist/the_doerfels) in the Wavlake player. You can't. You can find The Doerfels on Fountain, CurioCaster, Podverse, TrueFans, LNBeats, or any other podcast player type app, but you can't find them in the most popular v4v music player. That's odd to me, and it's odd to me that so many of you continue to shill for them considering they're just another platform that wants you to put all of you content on their platform. I thought people excited about nostr would think differently. I'm assuming it's due to ignorance of what's going on behind the scenes.
Until they lower their walls and allow any v4v musician to be played in their app, I will continue to speak out against Wavlake. I don't want new musicians coming into the space to think it's the only option available to them becasuse that's all that anybody ever mentions to them. And "Hey, they get to keep 90% of their earnings, so at least it's better than Spotify". Is that that the standard, better than Spotify? We have an opportunity to do much better than that, and give musicians the means to really control their music, not just host it on another platform that let's them keep a little more of their hard earned money than the other platform does.
