I'll sidestep the logic of --extract vs x, as that is a preference deal, and that works for you as a way to remember. (Not how I use tar, and that isn't going to change after 30 years.)
What I do find hilarious, and this mirrors the xkcd link, is when I *do* look at the man page for something I don't remember, they have grown to absurd lengths. I get why. Using zstd w/ tar is a good example. If we used "small sharp tools" in the original UNIX way, we wouldn't need so many options.
